HOW TO READ THESE

Definitions, then examples

The words are grouped by what they describe. Basic money and odds terms come first, followed by game-specific vocabulary. A few worked examples at the end show how the words fit together in a real round.

FOUR GROUPS

Where each term belongs

Sorting terms into groups makes them easier to remember, and shows which words travel between games.

  • Money and odds

Stake, house edge, RTP and return describe cost and payback.

  • Card tables

Hand, bust, natural and shoe appear on Teen Patti, blackjack and baccarat tables.

  • Wheel and reels

Pocket, payline, scatter and wild belong to roulette and slots.

  • Crash rounds

Multiplier and cash-out describe the rising-number format.

BASIC TERMS

Words for money and odds

These words apply to nearly every game in a casino lobby.

What is a stake?

The amount you put into one bet or round. It is the most you can lose in that round.

What is house edge?

The share of stakes a game is expected to keep over a very long run.

What is RTP?

Return to player, the long-run share of stakes paid back as winnings. A 96 per cent RTP keeps four per cent.

What is volatility?

How uneven a game pays. High volatility means rarer, larger wins and longer dry runs.

What is a bankroll?

The total amount you have set aside for play. It should be money you can afford to lose.

What is a limit?

A cap on what you will spend or lose in a session, chosen by you in advance.

GAME TERMS

Words specific to certain games

These words show up only on particular tables and games.

What is a natural?

In baccarat, a two-card total of eight or nine, which ends the round at once.

What is a bust?

In blackjack, a hand that goes over 21 and loses automatically.

What is a trail?

In Teen Patti, three cards of the same rank, usually the strongest hand.

What is a payline?

A line across slot reels where matching symbols pay.

What is a multiplier?

In crash rounds, the rising number that your stake is multiplied by when you cash out.

What is a live dealer?

A real host who deals or spins on camera while you bet on screen.

PUTTING IT TOGETHER

Three short examples

Seeing the words used in a real round makes the definitions stick far better than a list does.

  • A roulette spin

You place a stake on red. The ball lands on a red pocket, so the bet pays even money and your stake returns with the win.

  • A blackjack hand

You hold 12 and hit. The card brings you to 20, you stand, and the dealer busts at 23, so you win.

  • A crash round

You stake a small amount and the multiplier climbs. You cash out at 1.50, receiving one and a half times your stake.

  • A slot spin

You spin at a fixed stake. Three matching symbols land on a payline and pay according to the paytable.

If a term is not listed
A WORD IS MISSING

If a term is not listed

No glossary covers everything in a casino lobby, but a few habits help when you meet an unknown word.

  • Read the game's rules

The rules and terms of the exact game settle most questions.

  • Ask in writing

Put the question to whoever manages your account and keep the reply.

  • Do not guess with money

If a word is unclear, wait until you understand it.

GLOSSARY QUESTIONS

Questions about casino terms

Short answers about the vocabulary and where to check it.

Why do casino terms differ between games?

Each game grew up with its own vocabulary. The same idea may carry different names at different tables.

Is a high RTP always good?

It is better on average, but volatility also shapes a session, and RTP never predicts a single night.

What does house edge mean for me?

Over time you should expect to lose slightly more than you win. Budget as if the entertainment has a price.

Where can I find rules for a specific game?

Check the published rules of the exact game, since variants differ.

Are these terms used on every casino site?

Most are standard across the industry, but each game may add its own.
